The performance of buildings affects every one of us, really, since we all live in buildings and most of us work in them as well. And when something affects all of us, the opportunities from knowing more about the matter can be countless. Not only from a personal perspective, but also in terms of business and professional opportunities.

However, as you may already know well, this is a complex sector, and obtaining truly valuable information and insights can be challenging. Technical information is scattered across countless sources (standards, regulations, certification schemes, forums…). And, in the end, everyone ends up with their own interpretation of how things should be done, without much of a solid foundation.

And who really has the time, especially if it isn’t your main area of work, to research and look for the most reliable sources of information and up-to-date advice? Most professionals often end up just attending a handful of events or webinars that barely scratch the surface of technical and non-technical challenges.

On the other hand, companies offering specialised training or CPDs usually do it from a rather narrow perspective. Without considering the connections between different aspects of building performance, and avoiding topics that fall outside their preferred scope or that could tread on sensitive grounds.

But let’s go back to the opportunities for us!

How could I help if you are not directly involved in Building Performance assessments in your role?

Well, I think it will depend a lot on your specific role and context, and you’re probably in the best position to tell me that. So, considering you’ve made it this far… I’m all ears!

Researchers

If you’re doing research in areas related to building performance, especially if it involves energy or thermal modelling, it’s likely that you’ll struggle to find good practical training and advice. Let alone ongoing support, which is normally the most important part of training.

I’ve heard more than once of researchers getting stuck for weeks, struggling with software or calculation methods they can’t get proper support on. This doesn’t just drain time, it can also erode your momentum and motivation.

I can provide specialised practical training in IES Virtual Environment, including detailed HVAC and the most commonly used modules. As well as ongoing support for later questions, which is even more important since real doubts arise once you start working with it.

I can also provide training on thermal bridge calculations, particularly using THERM (2D) and HEAT3 (3D), as well as on interstitial condensation analysis using the simplified method (Glaser) and, to a more limited extent, dynamic assessments with WUFI.

And my offer of training is not limited to software skills, I can also provide training on how and when it’s better to use different modelling approaches, how to get good inputs or make appropriate assumptions, quality checks, revision of outputs, reporting results, etc.

Lecturers

If you are a lecturer and are not involved in current real-life projects, or you have experience in some but not all areas of building performance, I might be able to help you keep updated.

Or we could explore further opportunities for collaborating in preparing materials or lectures for specific, more practical topics.

Consultants in other areas

If you are a consultant working in related areas, you already know how valuable specialist insights can be. So, if you ever need clarity, guidance, or just a second opinion on Building Performance matters, you now know where to find it.

Manufacturers of related products

If you’re a manufacturer of a product related to Building Performance, you’re likely a specialist in your specific area, but perhaps less familiar with the wider landscape. Questions you might have

Are you sure you can provide support or advice to that many different profiles?

I’m sure that I’ll do my best to understand your needs and, if it’s a matter I’m confident I can help, I’ll do it. In some cases, I might need to prepare in advance (or draw on my contact network to get additional expertise) but I’d always let you know of any limitations.
You can also be sure that if it’s a matter I’m not confident or comfortable with, I’ll let you know as soon as possible and won’t waste your time.
But I’ve worked on many different aspects of Building Performance and have always been very curious and proactive about learning new areas. And I continuosly develop my knowledge, so I can provide good advice and support wherever it’s needed.

Would the training you offer be off-the-shelf or customized for my needs?

It depends on your starting point. If you already know the basics and have a clear idea of what you want to learn, the training can be fully customised. Otherwise, we can include a standard section to cover the fundamentals and then tailor the more advanced parts to your specific needs.
The main idea is always to be practical and specific. And to complement the training with ongoing support for later questions, which I believe is the most important part of any practical training.

Is it prudent sharing with you information of my company/organisation?

If you have any concerns about confidentiality, the first thing we’ll do before sharing information will be signing an NDA (non-disclosure agreement). Confidentiality will be central to our collaboration if you wish.

Will you publish information about our collaboration?

It’s up to you. If you agree that it can be beneficial for both, giving your company and work more visibility, we can do it. Otherwise, we can keep it to ourselves.
